Tony Robbins’s childhood

You might be wondering how did he become what he is today? Well, as you probably already know, childhood determines the quality of adult life. Not to say that only those children who were surrounded by loving family members have a chance to triumph, but just the opposite.

The grit young kids develop at the early stage is proven to be the deciding factor for a prosperous future. Tony was born as Anthony J. Mahorovic in North Hollywood California. His mother, Nikki Mahorovic was a notorious drug addict and an alcoholic who married several times after divorcing Tony’s father when he was only 7 years old. Tony went on to adopt one of his mom’s husbands’ last name Robbins at the age of 12. His real father John Mohorovic was a poor parking garage attendant who also actively participated in Tony’s chaotic and abusive upbringing.

He had no other option but to work to support his two siblings, who also suffered tremendously growing up in a dysfunctional family. On top of that, during that time in high school Robbins suddenly grew ten 10 inches taller, which a decade later, was diagnosed as the benign pituitary tumor in the brain. According to Robbins, the tumor disappeared on its own, and the hormonal residue kept on improving his unbeatable stamina to talk and travel ever so often.

The starting point

Tony wasn’t going to stay home and put up with the violence he grew up with. At the age of 17, he decided to leave the toxic environment his family imposed on him and set out on a search for a better life. Having no money in his pocket, he couldn’t even dream of attending college, which is why he ended up working as a janitor for miserable pay.

He was still supporting his family, both financially and mentally, as the oldest of three children. One day, while moving furniture at his second job, he asked a question that would change his life. He came up to one of his family’s acquaintances, whom his father always referred to as a “poor loser”, inquiring in a naive child voice how did he become so successful in the end? That is when he got introduced to one of America’s best-loved entrepreneurs and motivational speakers, Jim Rohn.

Although his landlord could send Tony to the seminar for free, he rejected his pleads and made him work harder to save and value the money he was going to spend. Tony was earning 40$ a week at the time, which was the approximate ticket price for a one-day event.

Rohn’s mantra was “true happiness is not contained in what you get, happiness is gained by what you become.” He was simply a continuation of the motivational self-improvement series that took place after the Great Depression, followed by Napoleon Hill and his Think and Grow Rich and Dale Carnegie with his iconic How to Win Friends & Influence People. Robbins was immediately inspired by Rohn’s unique approach where he spoke about changing the perception, rather than asking life to be easier on you.

What really shaped Tony Robbins is the idea Rohn instilled in his mind that he had to work hard on himself rather than improving his finances or workflow. In that way, he felt he actually had something to offer to other people, which was of immeasurable value. His humble beginnings date back to that time when he joined the promotional team, spreading the word about the seminars. A couple of years afterward he met the co-creator of Quantum Leap and Neuro-Linguistic Programming, John Grinder, and the rest is history.

How to raise leaders according to Tony Robbins

Tony Robbins & Opraha

Living in a turmoil since he was born, having been raised in poverty by an aggressive mother, Robbins only had two options. To feel sorry for himself, or to step up and transform the pain into victory, raising high like the Phoenix. Coming from a broken family, he learned how to appreciate a healthy environment more than anyone else. He encourages parents not to tell their kids how beautiful or perfect they are, but rather praise their persistence and grit when faced with difficulties.

A famous Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck agrees with Robbins, pointing out that a growth mindset, where kids learn how to become more flexible when approaching a challenge, is the key factor in determining future success. Robbins advocates for independent individuals who consciously chose not to stay in the fixed mindset, thinking and believing that God-given features such as beauty or talent precede hard work and determination.

Talking from his own experience, Robbins reflects back on his childhood where he had to find a long-lasting goal that would help him build a positive attitude towards the failures of life. Breaking through is the single most important skill that kids need to learn to become accomplished human beings, in both personal and business life.

He invites his followers on an inner journey where they dig deeper in a search of their true calling. He believes that people ought to find the unique talents that will lift them up from the bottom every time life hits hard.

Although he earned his first million before the age of 24, Tony hasn’t stopped ever since. At the age of 59, Tony has impacted millions of people, introducing educational programs in schools and donating to charities in third-world countries. Although his massive success can be easily accredited to his constantly growing book, audio and seminar business, Tony doesn’t seem to stop there. People don’t mind paying $8,000 only to spend an afternoon in the same conference hall with him, His business network sustainability is sure to impress any aspiring entrepreneur, and his piercing look and decisiveness are known to inspire masses.

If you ask Tony what is the secret, you will hear him gratefully reflecting upon his teenage years, where he learned the power of focus. Rather than giving in to everything you can’t control, such as your past, the political situation in the country, people’s expectations and so on, redirecting the power of intention is under your control.

Over his career’s course, Tony tirelessly worked on improving himself by serving others. In his own words, “I became obsessed with finding ways to do more for others than anyone else was doing, in less time.” The eternal pursue for a better future in which he would be able to impact other lives is what drives him to this day. According to the Bible that Tony likes to quote, to be great, you need to be able to serve others, and the more you give, the more you get. As simple as that.

Tony’s charismatic appearance, beaming self-confidence, and open body language have found the way to people’s hearts. His modest beginnings didn’t stop him from pursuing the life of his dreams, reminding the public that if he could do it, they can as well. By learning the skills of self-mastery, anyone can rule out the fear and take full responsibility for their life. His unquenching thirst for knowledge and desire to leave the world a better place is what makes him numero uno. According to Robbins, being mentally prepared to rise every time you fall is what success is ultimately all about.
